God-given effort. Peter’s point is that the knowledge of Christ is meant to be applied. It is less like an insurance policy and more like instructions: directions to a life of faithfulness and freedom and joy. We pursue that life as we pursue Christ-like virtues: not to save us (Jesus has already done that), not to keep us in the faith (Christ’s power is enough), but to grow in and respond to Jesus with our lives.

The knowledge of God. One of 2 Peter’s major themes relates to knowledge: knowing and understanding who Christ is and what he has done. That knowledge is essential to faithful life in Christ, and it is through that knowledge that grace and peace flourish within God’s people.

They say, John says. What we call “Palm Sunday” began here, in these verses, when Jesus was welcomed into Jerusalem as God’s King – but not quite in the way that the scriptures described him. The people hoped for a political and military leader who would throw off the shackles of Rome. Yet, John notes that the disciples eventually came to see him according to what the Bible prophesied: as the humble, peaceful King who would protect and rescue his people.
